Kinja'd!!!

And found out that only my emotions are black. This is a rant, this is only a rant. Proceed to the nearest emergency station and get your butthurt checked.

Yes, a Tesla S is a quiet car. A byproduct of being awesome, however; who buys a Telsa because it’s quiet? As it turns out – a lot of folks. With so much going for it, a Tesla’s quietness is an also factor, a value add… at least to my mind. Turns out, I may be wrong. Turns out, quiet is a selling point. Today I spoke to a successful hipster (evident in his dress, demeanour and the fact that he owned a Tesla S) about his car, why he bought it, and I wanted to die.

He said, “I’m not a car guy” and I balked. He said he bought it because it’s quiet. He said, “… it’s saving the environment.”

Today I discovered that I’d rather be lumped in with the Bro-Douche camp of Mustang and coal-rolling truck ownership than linger in the polluted waters of hybrid/electric possessiveness. Or perhaps I should say possession, because I’m fairly sure that’s what happens to these people, they become possessed.

It takes a special kind of person to spend the kind of money a Tesla S commands because there are always cheaper ways of being a pretentious douche. The same level of self-aggrandizing self-deception can be had for a lot less but neither Volt nor Prius carry the same gravitas. The non-car guy who believes he is saving the environment in his quiet Tesla S is the automotive equivalent of Reganomics; inexplicable.

Is it possible that the worst thing about a Tesla is the owner, on average?

I asked what he had cross shopped, I asked if he had looked at the Volt or even a Prius. He told me that the Prius was “ugly” and he’d never heard of the Volt. In shopping he had been to BMW, driven a few but didn’t like the conventional engine. Internal combustion, he told me, was over. I mentioned the batteries, I mentioned the toll a Prius battery takes on the planet and asked what he thought. No joke, dear reader, he said, “This is a Tesla” as though that answered it all.

He was a nice enough kind of guy, affable enough to discuss his car with an utter stranger but the sense was plain that he was mentally stroking it, beating his own mind-meat to the pace of our discussion.

Parting ways, thanking him for letting me paw at his car (which he did, and which was exceptionally kind) I happened to glance back some blocks away only to see him standing where I’d left him, staring at his car.

Oh come on now. There are plenty of really annoying people who drive other types of “Environmentally Friendly” cars to hate on. Spread that love around man, don’t be so selfish.

You are looking at it from a ‘car guy’ perspective.

To him it is just a status symbol. Just like the expensive watch, being able to brag about buying stuff at farmers markets and reading certain books that are hip right now.

He will never buy a Volt or a Prius because those of for ‘normal people’ and he worked hard to be above that and likes to show that.

10 years back he would have bought that BMW, not because of the ride, or the handling, but because of the badge.

Inexcusable.

Understandable, but reprehensible.

Just personally, I’d rather be a Mustang-bro rolling coal with my JDM buddies, all riced up and streetracing into curbs and poles at a rave than be in that camp. Just personally.

agree - there are folks whose reaction to internal combustion engines is “ick, dirty, loud”. Now they can have their mid sized luxury car without any “ick, dirty, loud”.

Whatever, that’s just how it goes. It’s nothing new, people have been buying cars as status symbols since the very beginning.

At least now, people like him think they’re saving the environment, whether or not they’re right (from a pure emissions standpoint, they are, esp. if their grid doesn’t source its power from coal).

That’s sort of a less selfish mindset to take.

Should have asked: If you like sleek, good looking, quiet cars then surely you are aware of this one. All the hipsters in (insert area/country) drive these. These are way beyond a Tesla.
